1853 Diary with Many Years of Varied Entries Cheapest For Sale

It is impossible for me to walk away from things like this, with so much life, so many stories–and so many years!–embedded in them.  This seems to have begun its life in 1853 as an E.P Chase’ s day book, but there is writing in it in a few different hands, and much of it from the 1880s, when E.P. or someone else took to using it to record the deaths of family members and friends–and of the “old horse!”–most of these having no relationship to the day on the diary that they were noted. There are other assorted notes about visitors coming and going, money collected, and the number of eggs gathered from the hens, as well as–my favorites–notes about where certain items of value were stored in the house, I assume such that someone else might find them after the writer’s death, though perhaps just as notes to self! What I most love about this is the layering and juxtapositions of information, and what that says about how central this little book was to the life/lives of its keepers.

4 7/8″ x 3 1/4″.  Good condition, forgive my terrible photos. Paper is a pretty pale blue, with some toning around the edges but in good shape. Approx. 100 pages, some with no entries at all, others full..
